The Fleetwood V-16: A Masterpiece of Automotive Engineering and Custom Design

Unleash the Beast: Engineering a 1200-HP V-16 for a One-of-a-Kind Roadster
The Genesis of a Super-Engine: Merging Two LS3 V-8s for Unprecedented Power
The Fleetwood V-16 engine project began with an ambitious vision: to fuse two LS3 V-8 engines from Blueprint Engines into a single, formidable 16-cylinder powerhouse. This intricate process was driven by the desire to power a bespoke, one-off custom roadster. The primary challenge, as noted by Bryan Fuller, was ensuring synchronous operation of the two V-8s to prevent catastrophic mechanical failure. The goal was to achieve an astonishing 854 cubic inches of displacement and an estimated output of around 1200 horsepower, pushing the boundaries of automotive performance.
A Visionary Design: Hot Wheels Collaboration for an Iconic Custom Roadster
The inspiration for the custom roadster destined to house this monumental engine came from Hot Wheels, with direct input from an affluent, anonymous client. The design of this 19.5-foot-long vehicle draws heavily from the elegance and grandeur of classic luxury cars, particularly echoing the spirit of the 1937 Cadillac V16 Hartmann Cabriolet. This blend of modern engineering with vintage aesthetic aspirations underscores the project's unique character, aiming to create a vehicle that is both a marvel of performance and a work of art.
Overcoming Engineering Hurdles: Harmonizing Dual V-8 Systems into a Unified V-16
Integrating two V-8 engines into a cohesive V-16 unit presented a myriad of engineering complexities. Fuller Moto meticulously addressed critical aspects such as precise timing, efficient cooling, optimal fuel delivery, and adequate air supply. Structural integrity was paramount, requiring innovative solutions to unify the two engines and ensure their combined output was managed harmoniously. The synchronization of these systems was crucial for the V-16 to operate smoothly and reliably, making it a true feat of engineering.
Precision in Motion: Advanced Timing and Torque Management for a Seamless V-16 Experience
Achieving the correct ignition timing for the V-16 involved clocking the rear engine back by approximately 45 degrees, allowing for the proper firing sequence of a true V-16 configuration. Both engines are initiated by a single starter, streamlining the starting process. Torque coupling is managed through a giubo joint, a flexible disc that links the front engine's rear with the rear engine's front. Three CNC-machined plates provide the structural connection, reinforcing the union of the two V-8 blocks.
Optimized Systems: Cooling, Ignition, and Air Management for Peak Performance
While ignition is handled by two separate computers with individual plug wires, leveraging the established tunability of the LS3 V-8s, cooling is a shared system. A high-pressure Meziere water pump circulates coolant through both engines, exiting via a custom dual outlet into a single radiator. Air induction is managed by a heavily modified Holley intake, which will undergo further adjustments as the powertrain is integrated into the vehicle's chassis. These optimized systems ensure maximum efficiency and performance for the V-16.
The Drivetrain and Future: Tremec T-56 Magnum and the Road Ahead
The power is transferred through a Tremec T-56 Magnum transmission, enhanced by Bowler Performance Transmissions with polished internals and other modifications. High-grade ARP hardware is used throughout the build, emphasizing durability and performance. Currently, the V-16 awaits the completion of the custom chassis by the Roadster Shop. Once the chassis is ready, the team will embark on the intricate process of assembling the engine, drivetrain, and body to create a fully operational, one-of-a-kind vehicle. Though the final completion timeline remains uncertain, the Fleetwood V-16 engine, displayed on its custom stand, stands as a magnificent testament to automotive ambition and craftsmanship.
