FIA's Vision for Rallying: Investing in Future Talent and Sport Development

The FIA has revealed comprehensive strategies to bolster the World Rally Championship (WRC) and cultivate talent within grassroots rallying. This follows a significant commercial rights agreement, promising a substantial financial injection into the sport. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized that these funds will be strategically utilized to uplift both elite-level competition and foundational rallying initiatives, signaling a renewed commitment to the sport's future. The plan includes revitalizing existing programs and introducing new ones to identify and support emerging drivers, ensuring a robust pipeline of talent and a more vibrant rallying landscape.

This renewed investment comes after French automotive company Cosmobilis and private credit investor Park Square Capital acquired WRC Promoter GmbH, securing a fresh commercial rights contract with the FIA. President Ben Sulayem hailed this agreement as the "deal of the century" for the WRC, contrasting it with previous less favorable arrangements in other motorsport categories. He underscored that the primary objective is not merely financial gain but fostering collaborative growth with the promoter, addressing challenges, and actively engaging with teams, drivers, fans, and media to enhance the sport's overall quality and reach. The focus is firmly on long-term development and a unified approach to strengthening rallying worldwide.

Renewed Focus on Nurturing Future Rally Talent

The FIA is re-energizing its efforts to identify and support aspiring rally drivers, aiming to revive and refine programs designed to unearth the next generation of WRC champions. This renewed emphasis is part of a broader strategy to secure the sport's future by ensuring a continuous influx of skilled participants. The FIA Rally Star program, which previously offered crucial career pathways for young talents, is slated for a return, albeit with modifications to enhance its effectiveness and reach. This initiative reflects the FIA's dedication to creating structured opportunities for young individuals to enter and progress within the demanding world of rallying.

A key component of this strategy is the establishment of the new FIA Growth Fund, specifically designed to finance projects that encourage young drivers to pursue careers in rallying. President Ben Sulayem elaborated that this fund will not simply distribute money but will strategically invest in initiatives that provide tangible support and development opportunities. The objective is to foster a more accessible and appealing environment for young talents, offering them the necessary resources and pathways to hone their skills and compete at higher levels. This forward-looking approach is expected to breathe new life into grassroots rallying and strengthen the competitive landscape of the WRC.

Strategic Investment and Collaborative Growth in Rallying

Following a landmark commercial rights agreement, the FIA is set to channel substantial financial resources back into the World Rally Championship and foundational rallying categories. This move, championed by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, signifies a pivotal shift towards reinvesting commercial gains directly into the sport's development and long-term sustainability. The agreement, facilitated by the acquisition of WRC Promoter GmbH by Cosmobilis and Park Square Capital, is viewed as a monumental achievement that promises unprecedented support for rallying. This strategic financial injection aims to address various aspects of the sport, from enhancing event quality to providing essential infrastructure for emerging talents.

The FIA's commitment extends beyond mere financial contributions; it emphasizes a collaborative partnership with the new promoter. Ben Sulayem highlighted the importance of working in unison to improve the sport, respond to feedback from all stakeholders—including teams, drivers, fans, and media—and navigate contemporary challenges. The newly formed FIA Growth Fund plays a crucial role in this vision, targeting programs that foster young driver development and overall championship growth. This holistic approach ensures that the investment is not just about money but about creating a harmonious ecosystem where all elements of rallying can thrive and evolve, making the sport more dynamic and engaging for everyone involved.

Shwartzman Returns to WEC Hypercar with Peugeot

Robert Shwartzman, a 26-year-old racing talent, is making a much-anticipated return to the World Endurance Championship (WEC) Hypercar category. He will be joining forces with Peugeot, piloting one of their upgraded 9X8 Le Mans Hypercars. This transition marks a significant chapter in his career, especially after Prema Racing's withdrawal from the IndyCar Series, where Shwartzman had previously achieved a pole position at the 2025 Indianapolis 500.

Shwartzman is no stranger to the Hypercar scene, having previously competed with the satellite Ferrari 499P LMH, managed by the AF Corse team. During his tenure, he impressively clinched victory at the 2024 Austin event alongside teammates Robert Kubica and Yifei Ye. His racing experience also extends to the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup, where he participated in a factory AF-run entry. This period coincided with his role as a test and reserve driver for the Ferrari Formula 1 team from 2022 to 2024, highlighting his diverse skill set across different motorsport disciplines.

Expressing his enthusiasm for rejoining the WEC, Shwartzman remarked on his excitement to return to endurance racing, a format he'd missed during his time in the US. He noted a warm reception from Team Peugeot TotalEnergies, feeling immediately integrated into a professional and ambitious environment. He eagerly anticipates contributing to the 2027 program and shaping the team's future successes.

Emmanuel Esnault, the team principal of Peugeot Sport, lauded Shwartzman for his inherent speed, adaptability, and maturity, identifying him as an ideal candidate for their project. Esnault highlighted Shwartzman's impressive mindset, approach, and positive attitude, emphasizing the team's desire to build a strong foundation, both on the human and sporting fronts, with him. Although Shwartzman currently has no active race program for the year following Prema's IndyCar exit, he is scheduled to test Peugeot's LMH vehicle mid-month at the Algarve circuit. This will be Peugeot's second test with the significantly revised 2027 model of the 9X8, which first debuted at Paul Ricard in late July.

As Peugeot finalizes its driver lineup for the 2027 WEC season, Esnault confirmed that decisions are still in progress. Additionally, Doriane Pin, the 2025 F1 Academy champion, who was recently signed as a development driver by Peugeot in March, is set to test a 2026-spec 9X8 at Paul Ricard in early December. This opportunity arose after the WEC rookie test in Bahrain was rescheduled to Monza. Esnault further indicated that Pin is being evaluated for a potential test and reserve position within the WEC squad.

The return of Robert Shwartzman to the Hypercar category with Peugeot is a significant development in the world of endurance racing. His proven track record, combined with Peugeot's advanced vehicle and strategic team leadership, sets the stage for an exciting season. This move not only underscores Shwartzman's versatility as a driver but also signals Peugeot's strong ambitions in the competitive WEC landscape.
