Federal Regulators Broaden Probe into GM V8 Engine Flaws

General Motors is facing increased scrutiny over its 6.2-liter L87 V8 engine, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has escalated its ongoing investigation. Initially, GM issued a recall for approximately 600,000 vehicles equipped with this engine due to identified issues. Subsequently, NHTSA initiated an inquiry in January to assess the effectiveness of the provided solutions. The latest development reveals a broader scope for this investigation, highlighting persistent problems with the engine across a wider range of vehicles.
The NHTSA announced an Engineering Analysis to delve deeper into the efficacy of the recall fixes and to examine engines produced after the initial recall period. This expanded probe includes several models from 2021-2026, such as the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra, and GMC Yukon/Yukon XL. The agency has received nearly 500 complaints regarding engine failures in vehicles that had already received GM's recall remedies, which included either higher-viscosity oil or a complete engine replacement. Additionally, 191 reports of L87 engine failures have been filed for units manufactured after May 2024, indicating that the problem may extend beyond the scope of the original recall and remedies. This brings the total number of vehicles under the expanded investigation to almost one million.
General Motors has been grappling with issues related to the L87 engine for some time, with multiple investigations launched and closed since 2022. The fourth investigation, initiated in January 2025, ultimately led to the significant recall. During these periods, GM reportedly received over 28,000 complaints concerning 6.2-liter engine malfunctions, with more than half of these incidents involving a loss of motive power, which poses a serious safety risk. The company attributed these failures to manufacturing and quality control issues from suppliers, including problems with crankshaft dimensions and rod-bearing damage. The ongoing nature of these engine troubles suggests a prolonged challenge for GM, even as it introduces new generations of V8 engines.
