Europe's First Fully Driverless Robotaxi Service Launched in Croatia




Zagreb, Croatia, has become the pioneering European city to host a fully autonomous, driverless robotaxi service, thanks to the innovative efforts of Verne, a local startup with backing from Rimac. These groundbreaking rides, now available to the public, operate without any human intervention inside the vehicle, marking a significant leap forward in autonomous vehicle technology for the continent. The service, facilitated through a partnership with Chinese autonomous driving firm Pony.ai, leverages the familiar Uber platform for passenger access, providing a seamless integration into existing urban mobility solutions.
The newly launched robotaxi service navigates a 22-kilometer (13.6-mile) route within Zagreb, connecting Verne's operational hub with a central business district and extending to the city's airport. This operational route showcases the system's capability to handle diverse urban environments. Unlike some other autonomous vehicle trials that maintain a human safety driver onboard, Verne's robotaxis are designed for complete autonomy. Pony.ai's advanced software takes full control of the driving process, encompassing steering, braking, and acceleration, while Verne's team remotely monitors the vehicles to ensure safety and efficiency. This driverless model sets it apart from services like those recently launched in London by Uber and Wayve, which still include human supervisors.
Verne and Pony.ai had previously introduced Europe's inaugural commercial robotaxi service in Zagreb in April. However, that initial phase still required a human operator present in the vehicle. The current iteration, devoid of any onboard human supervision, represents a crucial advancement, mirroring the trajectory of major robotaxi companies globally. Even early Waymo vehicles in the U.S. and some Tesla Model Y robotaxis initially had human oversight. The move to fully driverless operation signifies a maturation of the technology and increased confidence in its safety protocols.
The vehicles utilized in Zagreb are modified Arcfox Alpha T5 electric crossovers, originating from China. Verne has reconfigured the interior for an enhanced passenger experience, notably by removing the front passenger seat to create additional space for luggage and allowing rear passengers to fully extend their legs. A large display is mounted where the passenger seat's backrest would typically be, offering passengers real-time route information, entertainment streaming, and gaming options. While Verne previously showcased a more futuristic, purpose-built robotaxi concept with features like sliding doors and a panoramic sunroof, the company confirms that model remains under development, indicating future innovations in their fleet.
The introduction of this fully driverless robotaxi service in Croatia underscores a significant milestone in the European autonomous vehicle landscape. It demonstrates a growing trend towards driverless mobility solutions across the continent, with companies like Verne pushing the boundaries of what's possible.
