The Nissan 300ZX Turbo has always been celebrated for its robust 300 horsepower, elegant design, and an excellent blend of comfort and responsiveness since its debut in 1989. However, the question of how to further elevate an already meticulously crafted vehicle led to the creation of the Stillen SMZ. Stillen Motorsport, guided by founder Steve Millen, a seasoned Nissan racer and modifier, embarked on a project to enhance the Z-car, culminating in a turbo-charged coupe that offered significant upgrades.
Stillen's modifications were comprehensive yet carefully implemented, reflecting a deep understanding of the 300ZX's strengths. Under the hood, engine enhancements included a new intake manifold, air filter, and a free-flow exhaust system, combined with an additional 2 psi of boost, collectively yielding an impressive 65 more horsepower. These power improvements translated into quicker acceleration times, with the SMZ shaving 0.3 seconds off the 0-60 mph sprint and improving quarter-mile performance by 0.2 seconds and 1 mph compared to the standard model. Externally, the SMZ featured subtle styling revisions such as a distinctive rear wing, a more aggressive front spoiler, and unique rocker-panel and rear valance treatments. Inside, carbon-fiber accents adorned the door handles, center console, and gearshift, complemented by prominent alloy pedals, which, despite their visual appeal, sometimes led to unintended throttle blips for drivers with larger feet.
The SMZ’s suspension received a notable overhaul, incorporating higher-rate springs and stiffer anti-roll bars. These changes significantly improved roadholding, boosting skidpad grip to 0.92 g. Despite the firmer setup, the SMZ maintained a respectable level of comfort for its class, effectively absorbing road imperfections. The collaboration with Nissan North America to offer the SMZ as a complete package through dealerships, backed by a factory warranty, underscored the quality and integration of Stillen’s enhancements.
