Engel's DTM Title Hopes Dented by Sachsenring Penalty

Maro Engel's pursuit of the DTM championship title has suffered a major setback following a significant penalty at the recent Sachsenring event. The Winward Mercedes driver, who initially started from pole position, was penalized 15 seconds for a collision with Kelvin van der Linde. This incident led to a dramatic shift in the standings, with Engel losing all eleven points from the race and falling 23 points behind current leader Thomas Preining heading into the final race at Hockenheim. The post-race analysis highlighted critical errors in both driving and strategy, casting a shadow over Engel's championship bid.
The pivotal moment occurred during a restart when Engel, in sixth place, made contact with van der Linde's BMW under braking for the first corner, forcing the latter off track. Despite crossing the finish line in fifth, the penalty relegated Engel to 17th place. He candidly admitted, "Certainly not a happy situation," acknowledging his responsibility for the misjudgment. Engel also expressed broader dissatisfaction with the team's overall performance, stating, "Just made too many mistakes today - whether it was the strategy, whether it was from my side on the track."
The race stewards' decision to impose a 15-second penalty was deemed unavoidable, particularly as Engel took full responsibility for the incident during the hearing, explaining that his late braking caused the ABS to engage, rendering him a passenger. This penalty is standard for incidents that force a competitor out of the race, equating to three five-second penalty laps. Mercedes-AMG Sporting Director Thomas Jager supported the penalty, noting that Engel "had good tyres and knew he had to attack with them. And the preceding safety car period lasted a long time. Then time runs away from you - and then he simply wanted that little bit too much."
Engel also pointed to strategic missteps as a contributing factor to his vulnerable position. He questioned the decision to start on used slick tires, which he felt compromised his early race performance, especially against competitors like Ben Dörr who started on fresh tires. This strategic choice left him struggling in the initial laps and subsequently battling fiercely against Preining's Porsche stablemate Bastian Buus and Ricardo Feller, losing valuable time in the process.
The strategic discussions extended to pit stop timing. Engel's decision to pit on lap twelve, despite the window opening on lap five, was identified as suboptimal. Jager conceded that "in hindsight you are always wiser, but if you don't have the pace, then you could certainly have stopped earlier." This miscommunication and delayed pit stop meant Engel only regained his optimal pace later in the race, by which time Preining and other rivals had capitalized, further diminishing his chances.
The weekend's events at Sachsenring have significantly complicated Maro Engel's quest for the DTM title. A combination of an aggressive driving maneuver, which resulted in a substantial time penalty, and strategic miscalculations, particularly regarding tire choice and pit stop timing, left him in a precarious position. The loss of points has created a considerable gap to the championship leader, making the upcoming Hockenheim finale a challenging battle for the Winward Mercedes driver to overcome.
