China's automotive giant BYD has introduced its latest high-performance vehicle, the Denza Z electric supercar, a marvel of engineering that promises both breathtaking power and innovative charging capabilities. Unveiled at the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed, this groundbreaking vehicle is poised to make a significant impact on the global supercar market, with plans for a European debut already in motion.
The Denza Z stands out with its formidable 1,582 horsepower tri-motor all-wheel-drive system, which includes advanced torque vectoring for superior handling. Its rapid charging technology is equally impressive, allowing the battery to replenish from 10 to 97 percent in an astonishing nine minutes. The vehicle will be offered in several configurations, including a standard Coupe, a convertible Spider, a track-focused Racing model, and a Special Edition specifically engineered for the demanding Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit.
Underneath its sleek exterior, the Denza Z utilizes BYD's advanced e3 platform. This sophisticated architecture supports the vehicle's three electric motors, with two located on the rear axle to facilitate active torque vectoring, enhancing grip and stability. The car's low-slung, aerodynamic profile, meticulously crafted by BYD chief designer Wolfgang Egger, is described as a "living sculpture of speed," emphasizing both its aesthetic appeal and functional design. Measuring 188.4 inches in length and standing only 4.4 feet tall, the Coupe and Spider variants exemplify a design that balances visual allure with aerodynamic efficiency.
The exterior design incorporates a large front air intake that channels airflow to optimize aerodynamics, downforce, and cooling, crucial for high-performance driving. The Racing model takes this a step further with an even more substantial intake and a multi-channel cooling system to manage the thermal demands of its electric motors and brakes. Distinctive diamond-shaped taillights adorn the rear, while buyers can opt for a multi-layer pearlescent paint that subtly shifts color with changes in light and viewing angle. For the ultimate track experience, the Racing model can be outfitted with an adjustable three-stage carbon-fiber rear wing, extending its length by 3.5 inches and generating up to 2,337 pounds of downforce at 217 mph. The Special Edition further elevates performance with a composite body structure, active front diffuser, and an adjustable rear wing flap, reportedly achieving over 4,409 pounds of downforce at 186 mph.
The interior of the Denza Z is a testament to cutting-edge technology and luxury. The steering wheel integrates six physical buttons for quick access to features like Track and Boost modes. The cabin is equipped with an 8.9-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch infotainment display, and a wireless smartphone charging pad. Premium materials such as carbon fiber, suede-like upholstery, and metallic accents adorn the interior. Both Coupe and Spider models feature a 2+2 seating arrangement, while the Racing variant can be customized with a track-focused setup, including the removal of rear seats and the addition of a roll cage. The front seats offer extensive adjustability, including eight-way power adjustment, lumbar support, and heating, ventilation, and massage functions, with the Coupe and Spider adding adjustable side bolsters for the driver. Practicality is not overlooked, with the Coupe and Racing offering 8.8 cubic feet of trunk space, expandable to 19.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.
Powering all variants of the Denza Z is BYD's second-generation 76.0-kilowatt-hour Blade battery, which uses a cell-to-body design where the battery cells are directly integrated into the chassis. This design contributes to the vehicle's impressive performance and range: the Coupe achieves 255 miles, the Spider 249 miles, and the Racing variant 236 miles. The ultra-fast charging system supports up to 1,500 kW, enabling a 10 to 70 percent charge in five minutes and a 10 to 97 percent charge in just nine minutes. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability further enhances its utility. The advanced DiSus-M suspension system combines double wishbones at the front with a multi-link rear setup, while the Coupe and Spider feature air suspension, and the Racing model uses coil springs. All models incorporate magnetorheological dampers, which continuously adjust damping force for optimal ride and handling. Stopping power is provided by drilled carbon-ceramic brake rotors, reducing unsprung weight by approximately 66 pounds and offering a service life of up to 186,000 miles. These are paired with six-piston front calipers and four-piston rear calipers, available in various colors. A tire failure detection system ensures safety by instantly redistributing torque to stabilize the vehicle and can even perform a unique "compass turn" maneuver.
The Denza Z offers a wide array of customization options, with ten exterior colors including distinctive shades like Le Mans Blue and Nocturne Purple, and a multi-color fabric roof for the Spider. The interior also boasts ten themes, ranging from monochromatic to vibrant color combinations with contrasting accents. Drivers can activate a simulated engine sound through a dashboard button, choosing between traditional internal-combustion or futuristic sci-fi tones, with adjustable volume and output options (inside, outside, or both). A steering-wheel-mounted Boost button temporarily increases torque by 30 percent, while the Track mode button activates a dedicated performance display, lap time saving functionality, launch control, and a drift mode. A companion track app offers advanced customization, allowing drivers to fine-tune front-to-rear torque distribution, traction control, regenerative braking, suspension settings, brake assist, torque vectoring, ABS, and stability control. Orders for the Coupe, Spider, and Racing models are now open in select markets, with deliveries expected by year-end. The Special Edition will undergo further development for a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record attempt this autumn.
