Electric Vehicles Outperform Gasoline Cars in Longevity and Reliability, Study Finds

A comprehensive study spanning 47 million vehicle inspections in the UK has revealed a compelling truth: electric vehicles (EVs) generally demonstrate superior durability and fewer issues over extended periods of use compared to traditional gasoline-powered cars. This groundbreaking research effectively counters long-held concerns regarding the lifespan of EV technology, particularly battery longevity, which has often been misrepresented.
The study found that EVs were significantly less likely to fail the UK's annual roadworthiness tests. Specifically, vehicles aged between three and eight years with mileage ranging from 90,000 to 120,000 miles showed a 25% lower failure rate for EVs. This advantage widened even further for vehicles exceeding 120,000 miles, with EVs exhibiting a 32% lower failure rate. Furthermore, the analysis indicated that only 5.4% of EVs were retired from service after 15 years, a stark contrast to the 11.9% for gasoline cars.
While EVs did show a higher propensity for tire wear due to their increased weight, they remarkably experienced fewer suspension and brake-related defects. The reduced wear on braking components in EVs is attributed to their regenerative braking systems, which minimize reliance on traditional friction brakes. This data, alongside previous studies indicating lower breakdown rates for EVs, underscores the inherent advantages of electric powertrains, which possess fewer moving parts and emission components prone to failure.
The findings strongly suggest that concerns about the long-term viability of high-mileage EVs are largely unfounded. While diligence in checking a vehicle's service history and battery health remains crucial for any used car purchase, this study positions high-mileage EVs as an increasingly attractive and reliable investment. The inherent simplicity and advanced engineering of electric powertrains contribute to a more robust and dependable driving experience, offering a compelling case for consumers to embrace electric mobility with confidence.
