The Dual Narrative: Monuments to Elon Musk at SpaceX's Starbase

The Conflicting Perspectives: A Symbol of Progress and Irony
The Evolving Landscape of Starbase and Its Symbolic Art
Nestled near the U.S.-Mexico border, SpaceX's Starbase, a massive rocket development and launch site, has transformed significantly. Since its incorporation as the City of Starbase in 2025, the area has grown to house over 500 residents, with thousands working at the complex. This expansion has also made it a focal point for artistic expressions tied to Elon Musk's ventures, reflecting both the grandeur of his ambitions and the controversies they sometimes generate.
The Prometheus Monument: A Tribute to Innovation
A French foundry, Atelier Missor, recently unveiled its plans for a towering 50-foot statue near the Starbase complex. This monument, depicting the Greek mythological figure Prometheus holding a torch, is intended to symbolize humanity's advancement and the inspiring potential of SpaceX. Atelier Missor has previously expressed its desire to offer this "colossal titanium statue of Prometheus to Starbase," acknowledging SpaceX's role in fostering human imagination. While the extent of direct collaboration with Musk remains unclear, he has engaged with the foundry's online posts, appreciating their conceptual designs.
"Cards Against Humanity" Weighs In: A Satirical Counter-Monument
In stark contrast to the reverent tone of Atelier Missor, the creators of the irreverent card game "Cards Against Humanity" have launched a fundraising initiative for their own monument, explicitly designed to "f—k with Elon Musk." A spokesperson for the company revealed that SpaceX's operations at Starbase had negatively impacted a piece of land they acquired in 2017. This land was initially purchased to impede construction of a border wall during the previous U.S. administration. The company claims that the area has been littered with SpaceX equipment, and their efforts to restore it have been further complicated by new housing developments for SpaceX employees.
Legal Battles and Environmental Concerns at Starbase
The conflict escalated in 2024 when "Cards Against Humanity" sued SpaceX over property disputes, leading to a confidential settlement the following year. The card game company noted that SpaceX subsequently removed its equipment from the site. Describing the transformed landscape as a "corporate hellscape littered with broken rockets and ugly mansions," the spokesperson highlighted their disappointment with the environmental and aesthetic changes to the once pristine area. They have since formed the "Official Elon Musk is a Sad Little B—h with No Friends Monument Design Committee," raising significant funds from over 12,000 contributors to erect their satirical monument, aiming to represent "the kind of humanity we're actually against."
The ElonRWA Bust: A Viral Meme Brought to Life
Adding another layer to Starbase's evolving monumental landscape, a crypto group known as ElonRWA unveiled a bust of Elon Musk two years prior. Commissioned to resemble a widely circulated, poorly drawn internet meme of the CEO, this statue was intended to bridge the digital and physical realms. Louis XXII, ElonRWA's co-founder, stated their goal was to "bring this meme into the real world" and "touch more people." However, this bust faced vandalism in April 2025, sustaining damage during a period of widespread protests against Trump and Musk, particularly as Musk played a role in DOGE's efforts to reduce federal spending. The defaced statue was later humorously adorned with a pink bandage-like sticker, symbolizing the ongoing narrative surrounding Musk's public image.
