Denver Public Schools Unveils Major Electric Bus Charging Infrastructure

Denver Public Schools (DPS) has officially opened an advanced charging hub to support its growing fleet of electric school buses. This significant infrastructure upgrade, featuring 26 charging points, is powered by a Kempower distributed charging system boasting a total capacity of 650 kilowatts. The project was spearheaded by electrical systems provider Winn-Marion, with PowerFlex overseeing smart charging and energy management at the depot.
The new charging infrastructure at the Hilltop Bus Terminal is operational just before the school district's academic year commences on August 24. This development follows DPS's recent acquisition of 25 new Blue Bird Vision electric school buses, adding to its existing three, bringing the total electric bus count to 28. This expansion means electric vehicles now constitute 12% of the district's yellow school bus fleet, marking a substantial step towards sustainable transportation.
The Hilltop depot incorporates 13 dual-port Kempower Satellite dispensers, engineered to dynamically allocate its 650 kW power capacity across all charging plugs. This intelligent power distribution allows the district to prioritize buses with longer routes by delivering more power, while those requiring less energy receive an optimized charge. This system is particularly beneficial for school bus operations, which typically involve predictable return-to-depot schedules and periods of inactivity, making efficient energy management crucial.
According to information released by DPS, each electric bus costs approximately $400,000, in contrast to $140,000 for a diesel counterpart. However, the district successfully secured grants and rebates to cover the expenses for both the buses and the associated charging infrastructure, mitigating the initial investment disparity. DPS projects an annual electricity cost of about $1,900 per electric bus, significantly lower than the estimated $6,800 for diesel. This translates to an anticipated annual fuel saving of roughly $123,000 across the 25 new electric buses. Furthermore, electric buses are expected to incur about 75% less maintenance due to the absence of complex engines, transmissions, and numerous other moving parts found in diesel vehicles.
Despite the promising financial and environmental projections, DPS acknowledges that it requires more real-world operational data to conduct a comprehensive comparison of the lifetime costs between electric and diesel bus types. Each electric bus battery, costing $93,000, comes with an eight-year warranty. Major battery repairs are generally expected around years nine or ten, which aligns with the period when diesel buses typically start requiring more expensive upkeep. To monitor performance and validate these projections, the district plans to utilize a new monitoring system to meticulously track electricity consumption, maintenance requirements, and overall efficiency. This initiative is part of DPS's broader commitment to reduce its total greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90% by 2050, with transportation currently accounting for 14% of these emissions.
Beyond the environmental and economic benefits, the transition to electric school buses carries significant public health advantages. Currently, 26 million children in the United States rely on school buses, with 95% of the national fleet still running on diesel. The American Lung Association has highlighted that diesel exhaust is a known contributor to severe health issues, including asthma attacks and lung damage. Children are particularly susceptible to these adverse effects because their respiratory systems are still developing. Kempower's charging solutions are also deployed in various other locations across North America, including Quebec, Louisiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Indiana, and Wisconsin, underscoring the growing adoption of electric bus technology.
The establishment of this state-of-the-art charging infrastructure positions Denver Public Schools at the forefront of sustainable transportation within educational systems.
