Comprehensive Evaluation System for Commercial Vehicle Workshops Introduced
A new initiative designed to evaluate and enhance the quality of third-party commercial vehicle workshops has been unveiled. This system, known as the Maintenance Provision Rating Scheme (MPRS), aims to assess the capabilities and workforce standards of participating workshops through detailed audits and evidence-based evaluations. Managed by the Institute of Road Transport Engineers with collaboration from several key organizations, including government bodies and industry groups, the scheme is open to workshops of all sizes. It features a tiered rating structure, ranging from Qualified to Platinum, offering a clear pathway for improvement.
The MPRS operates on a progressive evaluation model. Lower levels such as Qualified and Bronze rely on independent assessments of self-submitted declarations, while higher tiers like Silver, Gold, and Platinum require rigorous auditing processes. According to officials, this framework not only boosts confidence among operators working with external maintenance providers but also establishes a systematic approach to enhancing overall operations. Senior Traffic Commissioner Richard Turfitt emphasized the necessity for operators to hold their suppliers accountable, especially during contract negotiations. The National Franchised Dealers Association highlights that the MPRS responds to an industry demand for reduced prohibition rates and greater transparency in operations.
Following successful trials in 2024, DVSA Head of Vehicle Policy Neil Barlow clarified that MPRS serves as a benchmark rather than a regulatory standard. He stressed that it focuses on setting expectations for both personnel and facilities, regardless of their scale or nature. Moreover, he reminded operators of their responsibility to ensure proper equipment and work completion when choosing external workshops.
