The tool collects detailed information on various aspects of repair challenges, such as vehicle specifics, types of maintenance required, and any barriers encountered—whether missing tools, unavailable original equipment manufacturer (OEM) data, or stringent software requirements. Roy Littlefield IV, TIA’s VP of government affairs, emphasized the significance of documenting these issues to protect the right to repair. In recent years, the rapid surge in new energy vehicle (NEV) sales has dramatically transformed the automotive repair market. Traditional gasoline-powered vehicle repair shops are now facing a pivotal shift as they adapt to the growing demand for electric vehicle maintenance. One such pioneer in this transition is Liao Jianghua, who has been at the forefront of the auto repair industry for over two decades. As NEVs become increasingly prevalent, Liao's journey from a conventional mechanic to an expert in electric vehicle repairs exemplifies the evolving landscape of the sector.

Liao's career began in 2001 when he opened his first modest repair shop in Chongqing. Over the next decade, he expanded his business to seven successful locations, capitalizing on China's booming automotive market. However, by 2016, the rise of NEVs began to impact his business significantly. With fewer customers bringing in traditional fuel vehicles, Liao recognized the need to pivot. In late 2020, he decided to transform one of his shops into a dedicated NEV repair center. This strategic move marked the beginning of a new chapter in Liao's career and the broader automotive repair industry.

The transition from gasoline to electric vehicles presented unique challenges. Unlike traditional cars with complex mechanical components, NEVs rely heavily on advanced electronics and battery systems. This shift required substantial investment in both human capital and equipment. Liao sent several technicians to Shenzhen for specialized training, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to handle electric vehicles. Additionally, he invested in high-tech diagnostic tools and safety gear, essential for working with high-voltage systems.

Despite the initial hurdles, the transformation proved fruitful. The pilot shop on Longxi Road saw a 25% increase in business within the first year. Encouraged by this success, Liao expanded the NEV repair services to another location. By 2024, only the two converted shops among his seven outlets experienced growth, underscoring the importance of adapting to market trends. The rising demand for NEV repairs, particularly from ride-hailing services and vehicles past their warranty period, highlights the growing necessity for skilled electric vehicle mechanics.

Looking ahead, the market for NEV maintenance is expected to flourish. According to industry forecasts, the maintenance and repair market for new energy vehicles could reach 300 billion yuan within the next few years. However, a significant talent gap remains, with an estimated shortage of 80% in qualified technicians. Recognizing this challenge, companies like JD Auto Service are investing in education and training programs to meet the rising demand.

Liao's foresight and adaptability have positioned him well in this evolving industry. His experience underscores the importance of staying ahead of technological advancements and market shifts.
