Classic Mustang Reimagined: A Tesla-Powered Revolution with Full Self-Driving

In an innovative endeavor bridging automotive eras, a 1966 Ford Mustang, a revered emblem of American classic cars, has undergone a radical transformation. This iconic vehicle now operates as a whisper-quiet electric car, powered by the sophisticated drivetrain of a 2024 Tesla Model 3. This remarkable project, a testament to modern engineering and a deep appreciation for automotive heritage, showcases the seamless integration of vintage design with state-of-the-art electric vehicle technology, including Tesla's advanced Full Self-Driving system. It represents a bold step in electric vehicle conversions, breathing new life into a beloved classic while equipping it with futuristic capabilities.
Yaro Shcherbanyuk, the visionary behind this unique creation and proprietor of Calimotive, a Tesla auto parts establishment in the Sacramento region, embarked on this ambitious journey in the summer of 2022. The quest began with the acquisition of a dilapidated 1966 Mustang, initially costing around $10,000, found via Facebook Marketplace. What started as a speculative venture into EV conversions quickly evolved into a dedicated two-year passion project for Shcherbanyuk, assisted by his father, Viktor, and brother, Daniel. Their initial thought was to use components from a Tesla Model S, but upon dismantling the Mustang, they discovered the 2024 Model 3's battery and chassis were a near-perfect fit for the classic car's wheelbase, requiring extensive fabrication and welding to integrate the Tesla's 'skateboard' platform into the Mustang's frame.
The conversion was not without its challenges, particularly in adapting Tesla's complex systems to the vintage body. The interior of the Mustang is a compelling blend of old and new: while features like hand-crank windows remain, they coexist with heated and cooled Tesla seats and the Model 3's 15-inch central media display, which controls most vehicle functions and receives firmware updates. A significant hurdle was the integration and calibration of Tesla's external cameras, essential for the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system. This process demanded meticulous placement and angling of the cameras, followed by approximately 2,000 miles of driving for proper calibration. Despite minor operational quirks, such as FSD's behavior at stops due to the Mustang's length, and temporary limitations like night-time FSD operation, the system functions remarkably well, providing a driving experience akin to a modern Tesla.
The total financial investment for this groundbreaking conversion amounted to approximately $40,000, encompassing the cost of the original Mustang, the Model 3 components, and other necessary modifications and paintwork. The project, requiring about eight months of intensive labor spread over two years, has garnered significant attention. While a small segment of car purists has expressed reservations about modifying such an iconic vehicle, the overwhelming response has been one of enthusiasm and curiosity, leading to numerous requests for similar conversions. Shcherbanyuk acknowledges the immense effort involved but remains open to undertaking another such project, perhaps if this distinctive Mustang finds a new owner, underscoring the potential for innovation within the classic car community.
This pioneering project not only revitalizes a cherished automotive classic but also pushes the boundaries of electric vehicle retrofitting, demonstrating the feasibility of integrating advanced autonomous technologies into older vehicles. It serves as a vivid example of how passion and ingenuity can transform a piece of automotive history into a cutting-edge machine, offering a glimpse into a future where classic aesthetics meet modern sustainable and intelligent transportation solutions.
