This announcement, made by Zhang Zhuo, the sales head for BYD’s Ocean series, at the Chengdu Auto Show, signals an expansion of BYD’s popular electric compact car segment.
The current BYD Seagull, known internationally as the Dolphin Surf or Dolphin Mini, has achieved remarkable success, ranking as the sixth best-selling EV globally in the first half of 2026, with over 27,500 units sold. Its affordability, starting at approximately $10,000 (69,900 yuan) in China, has made it a highly competitive option. The introduction of the “Great Seagull” suggests BYD’s strategy to offer a more spacious and feature-rich option while maintaining its competitive edge.
Official details from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filing reveal that the Great Seagull will boast larger dimensions than its predecessor. Measuring 4,205 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width, and 1,570 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,650 mm, it significantly surpasses the current Seagull’s 3,780 mm length. Furthermore, the new model will feature a more robust 95 kW (127 hp) electric motor, a substantial upgrade from the current 55 kW (75 hp) motor.
Although specific battery specifications and pricing are yet to be disclosed, expectations are high for the Great Seagull to incorporate BYD’s advanced Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging technology. Furthermore, sightings of the new model equipped with a LiDAR unit on the roof suggest the integration of more sophisticated safety and convenience features, aligning with modern automotive trends. While the current Seagull offers CLTC ranges of up to 305 km (190 miles) and 405 km (251 miles) with its 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh battery packs, respectively, the larger model is anticipated to offer comparable or improved performance. Given its enhanced features and size, the Great Seagull is expected to be priced slightly higher than the current model’s $10,000 starting price.
Recent public appearances of the undisguised Great Seagull have showcased its refreshed aesthetic, featuring a distinctive redesigned front end with sleek LED headlights, a minimalist grille, and sharp body lines, setting it apart from the standard version. The interior has also received an overhaul, boasting BYD’s latest design language with a larger central infotainment display, a reconfigured center console for improved utility, and a new two-spoke steering wheel. This new naming convention, following the “Great Tang” SUV and “Great Han” sedan, signifies its elevated status within BYD’s product portfolio.
