This action was prompted by German regulatory findings that indicated a defective starter relay capable of allowing water penetration. The compromised seal can lead to internal corrosion, electrical short-circuits, and critically, has the potential to ignite the engine compartment. The recall covers both the F30 and early G20 generations of the 3 Series, the F10 and G30 5 Series, and the F01/F02 and G11/G12 7 Series models.
The issue stems from the starter relay, identified internally by BMW as parts 0012820600 and 0012840600, which evidently was utilized across various model generations and production cycles. This widespread use means that a significant number of sedans are affected by this particular vulnerability. Owners of these vehicles will receive official notification from BMW, advising them to bring their cars to an authorized dealership. There, the entire starter motor will be replaced free of charge to rectify the defect and prevent the risk of fire.
