BMW Recalls Sedans Over Drivetrain Concerns

BMW has initiated a recall for approximately 28,000 sedans, citing concerns about a potential rollaway risk and the complete loss of power to the rear wheels. This comprehensive safety measure targets 27,720 vehicles across various models, specifically certain 8-series from the 2022–2026 model years, 5-series models from 2021–2023, and 750e xDrive sedans from 2024–2026. The action follows findings from documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which highlighted a critical vulnerability in the vehicle's drivetrain.
The core of the problem lies in the connection between the driveshaft and the rear-axle differential. Over time, this connection is susceptible to excessive wear, which can severely compromise the vehicle's operational safety. Such degradation may culminate in a total loss of propulsion to the rear wheels, dramatically increasing the risk of a collision. Furthermore, if the parking brake is not activated, the affected vehicles could unexpectedly roll, posing an additional hazard. Although the recall documentation does not specify any prior warnings or indicators of the defect, BMW has confirmed no accidents or injuries have been reported in relation to this issue.
To address these safety concerns, BMW dealerships will conduct thorough inspections of the driveshaft and rear differential on all recalled vehicles. Depending on the assessment, technicians will either reinforce the connection with an adhesive or, if necessary, replace both the driveshaft and the rear differential entirely. Vehicle owners are scheduled to receive notification letters with detailed instructions by October 2, informing them to schedule the required free service. Owners can also proactively verify if their vehicle is part of this recall by checking the NHTSA recalls website using their car’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
This recall underscores the automotive industry's commitment to vehicle safety and continuous improvement. It serves as a reminder that vigilance and proactive measures in identifying and rectifying potential defects are paramount, ensuring consumer confidence and upholding safety standards for all road users. Such actions not only prevent future incidents but also reinforce the trust between manufacturers and their customers.
