BMW i5 Range Boost and NACS Adoption Mark a New Era for Electric Sedans




The 2027 BMW i5 electric sedan is poised to redefine the luxury EV segment, boasting an enhanced driving range and the integration of a native North American Charging Standard (NACS) port across its entire lineup. This strategic upgrade comes at a pivotal moment, as other prominent electric vehicles, such as the Tesla Model S, are seeing shifts in their market presence. With these improvements, BMW aims to offer a more compelling and convenient electric driving experience, solidifying its position in the rapidly evolving EV landscape.
For the American market, BMW is currently presenting two distinct powertrain configurations for the 2027 i5, in addition to the high-performance i5 M60 variant. Interestingly, the M60 model continues to be offered as a 2026 version, already equipped with the native NACS charging port, signaling a broader transition across the i5 family.
The entry-level 2027 BMW i5 eDrive40 showcases remarkable advancements in efficiency. When fitted with 19-inch wheels, this model achieves an impressive EPA-estimated driving range of up to 328 miles on a single charge. This represents a notable 18-mile increase, approximately 6%, compared to its predecessor. This gain is attributed to significant improvements in the vehicle's overall efficiency, with the eDrive40 now achieving an average of 116 MPGe, translating to 3.45 miles per kilowatt-hour or 29 kWh per 100 miles. This is a considerable step up from the 2026 model's 110 MPGe (3.23 mi/kWh or 31 kWh/100 mi) with identical powertrain and wheel specifications.
However, prospective buyers should note that the choice of larger wheels influences the driving range. Opting for 20-inch wheels reduces the rear-wheel-drive i5's range to 299 miles, while 21-inch wheels further decrease it to 262 miles, a common characteristic across most electric vehicles. Under the hood, the 2027 i5 eDrive40 is propelled by a single, rear-mounted electric motor, delivering 335 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a swift 5.4 seconds, reaching a top speed of 120 mph.
Moving up the lineup, the all-wheel-drive i5 xDrive40 shares the same high-voltage battery as its single-motor counterpart but incorporates an additional drive unit on the front axle. This boosts the total power output to 389 horsepower, while the torque remains at 295 lb-ft. The added power allows the i5 xDrive40 to sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds, with an elevated top speed of 130 mph. Despite the performance increase, the additional power and weight lead to a slightly reduced estimated driving range of 262-283 miles on a full charge.
The 2027 BMW i5 also offers rapid charging capabilities, supporting up to 205 kilowatts from a DC fast charger. This enables the vehicle to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. BMW further estimates that a mere 10-minute top-up can provide an additional 80 to 86 miles of range, making long-distance travel more convenient.
The top-tier i5 M60, still available as a 2026 model, maintains its NACS port and delivers an impressive 593 horsepower. This all-wheel-drive variant can achieve 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds, with a maximum range of 253 miles. BMW's transition to the NACS connector from the previous CCS charge port earlier this year ensures broader compatibility with charging infrastructure. To ease this transition for customers, BMW is providing free adapters for both DC and AC charging with all new i5s sold in the United States. Pricing for the 2027 BMW i5 eDrive40 begins at $68,550, with the dual-motor version requiring an additional $3,000. The 2026 i5 M60 starts at $85,550.
