BMW Art Car Collection: A Half-Century of Merging Automotive and Artistic Excellence

In a landmark celebration of five decades of creativity, the complete BMW Art Car Collection, famously described as 'rolling sculptures,' has been brought together under one roof for the very first time. Hosted at BMW Welt in Munich, the exhibition "BMW Art Cars—20 Artists, 50 Years Of Innovation. Reunited At BMW Welt." provides an unparalleled opportunity to experience this unique fusion of automotive engineering and artistic expression. Running from July 29 to August 31, 2026, the event is a culmination of a global tour and offers free admission to all visitors.
The genesis of BMW's distinguished Art Car initiative dates back to 1975. The visionary Hervé Poulain, a race driver and art expert, alongside Jochen Neerpasch, then head of BMW motorsport, initiated a collaboration with artist Alexander Calder. Calder transformed a BMW 3.0 CSL into a vibrant canvas for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. What began as an experimental endeavor quickly blossomed into an enduring legacy, evolving into what Neerpasch proudly declared as the globe's most significant collection of automotive artistry. These bespoke vehicles, adorned by a pantheon of modern art luminaries including Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons, now represent some of BMW's most prized assets, seamlessly intertwining the brand's heritage of design and performance with the dynamic world of art.
Throughout the years, the collection grew to include an impressive roster of artists, each leaving their indelible mark on a BMW model. After Calder's inaugural 3.0 CSL in 1975, Frank Stella contributed his vision to another CSL in 1976, followed by Roy Lichtenstein's interpretation of a 320i Turbo in 1977. Andy Warhol's iconic M1 in 1979 remains a highlight, while Ernst Fuchs and Robert Rauschenberg each reinterpreted the 635 CSi in 1982 and 1986, respectively. The late 1980s saw Michael Nelson Jagamara and Ken Done offering their unique perspectives on the BMW M3 Group A (E30) in 1989.
The artistic journey continued into the new millennium with equally groundbreaking contributions. Olafur Eliasson transformed a hydrogen-powered BMW H2R prototype into an environmentally conscious installation in 2007. Jeff Koons brought his signature vibrant aesthetic to a BMW M3 GT2 in 2010. More recently, John Baldessari crafted the BMW M6 GTLM in 2016, Cao Fei developed an innovative digital concept based on the BMW M6 GT3 in 2017, and Julie Mehretu completed the latest addition in 2024, inspired by the BMW M Hybrid V8. These diverse creations underscore the collection's breadth and its continuous evolution, reflecting contemporary artistic trends and technological advancements.
The current exhibition is meticulously organized in reverse chronological order, guiding visitors through the history of the collection from the newest artistic endeavors back to its pioneering origins. Engaging video presentations and a detailed timeline enhance the visitor experience, offering rich historical context for each masterpiece. The journey commences with John Baldessari's Art Car #19 and Julie Mehretu's Art Car #20, culminating in the display of Alexander Calder's foundational Art Car #1, majestically positioned on a central pedestal. A particularly striking feature is Olafur Eliasson's BMW H2R Project (#16), situated on the East Plaza. This installation transforms BMW's hydrogen-powered H2R prototype by replacing its body panels with a skeletal metal frame enveloped in frozen water. Internally illuminated and weighing approximately two tons, this sculpture serves as a poignant reflection on environmental stewardship, prompting viewers to envision the automobile in new dimensions of time and space.
Visitors can also immerse themselves further through various digital platforms. The 'Treasure Hunt' application invites guests to locate and scan five artworks throughout the exhibition, rewarding them with a complimentary refreshment voucher for Cooper's Garden. Additionally, the 'Artlas' app, available in 25 languages, offers personalized tours, audio guides, and an AI-driven chat feature, enriching the understanding and appreciation of each Art Car. Beyond the captivating displays, the exhibition also offers daily bilingual guided tours, which can be reserved online, and features a selection of exclusive merchandise in the BMW Welt shop, including the official BMW Art Cars book, scale models, and items from Cao Fei's distinctive capsule collection. This comprehensive presentation ensures an engaging and enlightening experience for all attendees.
