Audi's upcoming electric A4 model is experiencing a significant delay, with production now anticipated to commence no earlier than March 2029. This setback is primarily attributed to persistent technical difficulties encountered with Volkswagen Group's advanced Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which is central to the next generation of electric vehicles. The delay reflects ongoing challenges in developing complex EV architectures and has broader implications for several other models within the Volkswagen family.
This postponement extends beyond the A4 E-Tron, impacting other SSP-dependent vehicles as well. The electric Golf and T-Roc models are also projected to face delays, potentially pushing their market introductions into 2030. These continuous delays highlight the ambitious nature of the SSP project and the unforeseen hurdles in integrating a completely new electrical system, which has necessitated extensive re-engineering across various components and supplier networks.
Audi's Electric A4 Faces Prolonged Setback
The introduction of the electric Audi A4, envisioned as a key vehicle for validating Volkswagen Group's next-generation electric platform, has been deferred. Initially targeted for mid-2028, the production start for the A4 E-Tron is now scheduled for March 2029, a delay confirmed by Audi CEO Gernot Döllner. This shift is a direct consequence of technical complications arising from the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), Volkswagen's innovative electric vehicle architecture. The platform's development has proven more challenging than anticipated, leading to a revised timeline for its integration into new models.
Reports suggest that this March 2029 production date might even be subject to further adjustments, potentially shifting to later in the spring. While officials like Chief Technical Officer Rouven Mohr initially downplayed the need for timeline corrections, the reality of the SSP's development issues has necessitated a formal revision. The A4 E-Tron, designed with inspiration from the Concept C, is still planned in both sedan and Avant body styles, remaining a foundational model for Audi's electric future, whenever it ultimately arrives on the market.
Challenges in Volkswagen's SSP Platform Development
The core of these delays lies in the inherent complexities of Volkswagen's Scalable Systems Platform (SSP). This platform, first announced in July 2021, was designed to supersede both the MEB and PPE architectures, aiming for a unified EV foundation across various brands. However, nearly five years since its announcement, no vehicle has yet entered production using the SSP. A critical factor contributing to these protracted delays was Volkswagen's decision to transition SSP's onboard electrical system from a standard 12-volt to a 48-volt architecture mid-development. This change triggered a cascading effect, demanding extensive re-engineering and recalibration across the entire supply chain and internal divisions.
The delays signify that the SSP is now approximately three years behind its initial 2026 launch target. Furthermore, Volkswagen has strategically scaled back the platform's scope, reducing the number of planned variants from eight to four. This consolidation is framed as a strategic optimization rather than a defensive retreat, though it underscores the severe challenges faced. Consequently, Audi's current MEB- and PPE-based electric vehicles will remain central to its lineup for longer than initially planned, with consumers waiting significantly longer for mid-size electric Audi options. The prolonged development also impacts models like the electric Golf and T-Roc, pushing their potential releases into the next decade, with collaborations involving partners like Rivian also being pushed to the "end of the decade."
