The next generation of the Audi A2, reimagined as a fully electric vehicle, has been observed in Denmark without its usual testing concealment. This new model, the A2 E-Tron, departs from its internal combustion engine predecessors, adopting an electric powertrain akin to the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo. Before its official unveiling later this year, prototypes were photographed during a break from testing near Copenhagen, providing a clear view of its contemporary design elements.
Audi's traditional black-and-white patterned camouflage has been replaced by a vibrant E-Tron decal scheme, accented with neon green. This allows for an almost complete visual assessment of the car. Notable design cues include sleek winglet-style door handles, reminiscent of the recently revealed 2027 BMW X5. At the rear, a distinctive spoiler pays homage to the original A2 supermini, dividing the rear window—a design choice that raises questions about potential impacts on rearward visibility.
Design and Legacy: The Audi A2 E-Tron's Distinctive Appearance
The A2 E-Tron’s exterior design integrates elements from its classic predecessor with Audi’s evolving aesthetic. While concept vehicles like the Concept C and Nuvolari have hinted at future design directions for Audi, the A2 E-Tron represents one of the final models to feature the current design language, alongside the Q9 three-row SUV. The electric hatchback prominently displays the familiar split-headlight configuration: a slender upper light bar houses the daytime running lights and turn signals, while the primary headlights are situated below, concealed behind darkly tinted glass. Even on these test models, the low and high-beam modules are subtly integrated.
Mirroring its first-generation counterpart from the late 1990s, the front quarter glass, rear spoiler, and pronounced wheel arches of the A2 E-Tron all draw inspiration from the original model. The overall body shape maintains the unique blend of a compact hatchback and a minivan, a quirky characteristic of its predecessor. The prototypes observed were equipped with 19-inch wheels, fitted with Bridgestone Turanza 235/45 R19 tires, and featured aero covers to optimize airflow and enhance efficiency. The interior, though still under wraps with fabric coverings, hints at a dual-screen setup. Audi has indicated a future shift towards less screen-dominant cabin designs, a transition that will be gradually implemented across its model range. The Concept C offers a glimpse into these minimalist future cabins, with new interior layouts expected to arrive with high-volume models like the A4 E-Tron around 2028.
Underpinnings and Market Positioning of the Electric A2
While the precise technical specifications for the Audi A2 E-Tron remain undisclosed, insights can be drawn from its close ties to the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo. The A2 E-Tron is anticipated to utilize the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform, featuring a rear-wheel-drive configuration and offering multiple battery options. For context, the updated ID.3 provides battery capacities of 50 kWh, 58 kWh, and 79 kWh, with the largest variant capable of an estimated range of up to 391 miles (630 kilometers). Power output for the ID.3 Neo ranges from 168 hp to 228 hp, suggesting a similar performance spectrum for the A2 E-Tron.
Upon its debut this autumn, the Audi A2 E-Tron is expected to be priced higher than the comparable Volkswagen ID.3 Neo. The ID.3 Neo starts at €33,995 in Germany, with fully equipped versions reaching over €50,000. It is projected that the base model of the new A2 will significantly undercut the €47,500 price point of the Q4 E-Tron in Germany, positioning it as an accessible entry-level offering in Audi’s electric vehicle lineup. This strategic pricing aims to make the A2 E-Tron a competitive option, especially following the discontinuation of the A1 Sportback supermini and Q2 subcompact crossover earlier this year, making it Audi’s new entry-level model.
