Guidelines for Healthy Beverage Choices for Children
A consensus statement from four leading health and nutrition organizations highlights the importance of healthy beverage choices for children and adolescents. According to CNN wellness expert Dr. Leana Wen, water is the best hydration source, meeting most of kids' fluid needs. Plain pasteurized milk is recommended in moderation, while juice intake should be limited to small daily amounts, with whole fruits preferred over juice. Plant-based milk alternatives are only advised for specific dietary needs, and sweetened beverages, including sports and energy drinks, are discouraged due to high sugar content and potential health risks. Artificially sweetened drinks are also not recommended due to insufficient safety data. The guidance emphasizes that healthy drink choices are as crucial as food choices in shaping children's diets and preventing obesity-related health issues.
